O cantor de jazz John Maurice Hartman nasceu no 3 de Julho de 1923 em Chicago e embora não tenha recebido em vida o devido reconhecimento, foi um dos maiores e mais suaves cantores negros de baladas dos anos 50 e 60 que foi comparado a cantores de primeira linha como Billy Eckstine e Nat King Cool. Johnny também se notabilizou pelas suas parcerias em gravações que se tornaram antológicas como a obra-prima que é o registo do encontro em estúdio em 1963 com o saxofonista e jazz man, John Coltrane. Hartman . Começou a cantar ainda no exército, estudou música na faculdade e forjou a sua carreira profissional a partir dos meados dos anos quarenta cantando com a banda de Earl Hines, quando também gravou o seu primeiro trabalho. Quando a banda se desfez em 1947 foi cantar com a Orquestra de Dizzy Gillespie e com ele ficou por dois anos, aproveitando para gravar por fora alguns discos a solo. O seu primeiro trabalho que lhe trouxe sucesso foi o LP “Songs from the Heart” (Savoy Jazz, 1947) com um quarteto liderado pelo trompetista Howard McGhee. Gravou também um álbum que consta entre os seus melhores, “All of Me” (Bethlehem, 1956) e ficou sem gravar até 1963, quando então gravou com John Coltrane "John Coltrane andJohnny Hartman" (Impulse!, 1963). O sucesso do disco levou à gravação de mais dois discos, “Lush Life” em homenagem à Billy Strayhorn, “I Just Dropped by To Say Hello” I Just Dropped By to Say Hello (Impulse!, 1963) e “The Voice That Is” The Voice That Is! (Impulse!, 1964). Johnny voltou aos estúdios de gravação esporadicamente nos anos 70. Dois anos antes da sua morte em Nova Iorque no dia 15 de Setembro de 1983, foi indicado para o Grammy pelo álbum “Once in Every Life” Once In Every Life (Bee Hive, 1980).

John Coltrane is one of the most inventive and innovative jazz musicians of all time, but he very well may be at his best with his work on these six simple ballads. By employing Johnny Hartman as the vocalist, Mr. Coltrane's tenor sax perfectly meshes with Mr. Hartman's deep, rich baritone voice. Mr. Hartman's voice is so sweet and mellow it practically drips out of your speakers. The songs are all arranged in a simple and understated manor and that adds to their elegance. Mr. Coltrane plays in smooth yet forceful tones that turn simple riffs into majestic sounds. McCoy Tyner provides the backbone of the album with his piano playing. He fills the holes with pretty tinkling of the ivories. The band is at their peak on the opening track "They Say It's Wonderful" that opens with a 2 minute solo by Mr. Coltrane and then drops Mr. Hartman's silky dulcitones on you. It doesn't get any more romantic than right here. 

The perfect blend of passionate tenor saxophone and sensual baritone vocals, John Coltrane and Johnny Hartman is one of the most romantic albums ever recorded. Both legends in their own right - John Coltrane as one of the most ingenious and inventive tenor saxophonists and Johnny Hartman the ultimate balladeer - their synergy on this 1963 recording resulted in a masterpiece that far surpassed the popularity of any of their individual recordings. Recorded at the Van Gelder Studio, Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey on March 7, 1963.
