(Turns You On, aka Something to Remember)
Fancy were an early-mid 1970s pop group. The band was made up of session musicians produced by Mike Hurst. They had a surprise U.S. hit single in 1974 with a version of the classic "Wild Thing" and a second U.S. hit with "Touch Me" (March 1974). They were initially fronted by Penthouse Pet, Helen Caunt and then Annie Kavanagh. Ray Fenwick formerly of the Spencer Davis Group joined Fancy in 1974.
Fancy were something of a seventies phenomenon. The band were a bunch of session musicians, who seizing the main chance had a surprise US hit single in 1974 with a version of the classic "Wild Thing". Originally fronted by Penthouse Pet Helen Caunt (who according to producer Mike Hurst breathed rather than sang the words) the band featured seasoned sessioners Ray Fenwick and Mo Foster.
After their initial success, Fancy went back into the studio to cut a follow-up single with new vocalist Annie Kavanagh and drummer Les Binks. The result, "Touch Me" also went Top 20 in the States and the band subsequently toured there to great acclaim.
However, there was something of a dichotomy, for Fancy live and on album were substantialy different to Fancy the band on the singles. In concert, they were a powerful, funky, proggy rock band. A second album 'Something To Remember' was recorded quickly at the start of 1975 with new vocalist Annie Kavanagh & future Judas Priest drummer Les Binks and released in time for a major UK tour supporting 10CC when Fancy's straight-ahead playing contrasted with 10CC's more intricate excesses.
The second album, (titled "Turns You On" in the USA but for the UK - perhaps somewhat ominously - "Something To Remember") was a fine album but unsuccessful and poor sales failed to capitalise on the earlier singles success.
Les Binks subsequenly joined Judas Priest, whilst Ray Fenwick continued as an in-demand session player alongside a parallel career in the Ian Gillan Band and his project Forcefield. Mo Foster who has written a history of British guitar, returned to sessions with artists such as Jeff Beck and Cliff Richard.
