“Maladjusted” é uma excelente compilação que reúne 28 faixas lançadas pelos grupos beat associados ao cantor Mal Ryder, The Spirits e The Primitives, entre 1964 e 1967. A compilação traça sucintamente a progressão da banda de R&B ao estilo dos Pretty Things até ao rock mod. Inicialmente a formação de The Primitives era constituída por Jay Roberts (nascido Jeffrey Farthing) como vocalista, Geoff Eaton (nascido Geoff Tindall) na guitarra solo, John E. Soul na guitarra ritmo, Roger James no baixo e Mike Wilding na bateria. Em agosto de 1965, passaram a chamar-se Mal & The Primitives (com a entrada do vocalista Mal Ryder). O grupo passou a ser formado pelo seu segundo vocalista Mal Ryder, Roberts (no baixo), Soul (que saiu pouco depois), Stuart Linnell (guitarra solo) e Mick Charleton (bateria). The Primitives nunca alcançou sucesso em Inglaterra ou nos EUA, mas conseguiu tornar-se famoso em Itália. A banda separou-se definitivamente em 1970, em Roma, Lazio, Itália.
