GS I Love You - V/A, Japanese Garage Bands of the '60s

Japan, like many non-English-speaking countries, was home to a thriving garage/beat band scene in the 1960s. The Japanese scene, at least to Western ears, was more peculiar than most: for one thing, it didn't really kick into gear until well into 1966, and Japanese groups were still playing in an early British Invasion-influenced style until the end of the decade. Singing in both Japanese and heavily accented English, the guitars (as a result of the Ventures huge popularity there) were surf-ish Mosrites, and the material was often a strange fusion of Merseybeat, punk, and over-the-top weirdness. GS I Love You is a 28-track compilation of songs originally released on the Crown and Teichiku labels, and while it's no match for the British groups (or, for that matter, the best beat/punk groups from Holland and Sweden), it's truly like no other '60s rock you've heard. The guitar work is often frenzied and imaginative; the vocals walk the line between tough raunch and low comedy, particularly when they mangle English phonetics (the Swing West's version of Arthur Brown's "Fire," as well as the Out Cast's butchering of "Long Tall Sally" defy printed description). Sound quality and liner notes (in English) are excellent, and cuts like the Blue Jeans "One More Please" are genuinely good fusions of pop and punk, making this a good pickup for the more adventurous '60s collector. ~ Richie Unterberger

Les Pingouins - Les Pingouins (1962-1963)

Les Pingouins sont un groupe de rock français du début des années 1960.

Ils apparaissent sur le marché du disque assez tardivement (en février 1962) par rapport à des groupes concurrents déjà bien installés tels Les Chaussettes Noires, Les Chats Sauvages, Les Pirates et Les Vautours. Ajoutons que la mode des groupes ne va pas tarder à disparaître, puisque la plupart des chanteurs des groupes de l'époque entament une carrère solo fin 1962 ou au cours de l'année suivante. 

Ceci explique peut-être la brièveté de la carrière de ce groupe pourtant jugé excellent (tant sur le plan instrumental que sur le plan vocal) par la plupart des amateurs.

Membres:
Le chanteur du groupe est Lou Vincent (Louis Locatelli). Après deux disques avec les Pingouins, il est appelé sous les drapeaux, puis démarre à son retour une carrière solo sous le nom de Thierry Vincent.
Dominique Blanc-Francard est le plus jeune du groupe (seize ans). Il est le bassiste (sous le nom de Mino).
A la batterie, c'est Gérard Hugé qui, comme le chanteur, quittera le groupe après deux disques et poursuivra sa carrière dans l'orchestration et la production.
Enfin, deux guitaristes complètent le groupe, Christian Prunier (guitare rythmique) et Gus (Alain Fournier, guitare solo, gaucher jouant sur une guitare pour droitier tenue "à l'envers").

Leur premier 45t propose quatre titres dont Regarde le Ciel (un original) et Oh, les filles !, adaptation d'un morceau américain intitulé Sugaree qui sera repris dans les années 1970 par le groupe Au Bonheur des dames. A noter que le groupe Les Chaussettes Noires avait lui aussi sa version de Sugaree avec des paroles différentes (Chérie Oh Chérie). Autre très bon morceau : Le Transistor (paroles d'Eddie Vartan) également interprété par Frankie Jordan.

Le deuxième 45t, qui sort en avril 1962 contient une splendide adaptation de Searchin' (de The Coasters) sous le titre Cherche avec des paroles de Gisèle Vesta (Eh ! bien cherche... oui cherche...). Autres adaptations sur ce même disque : Un Cœur tout neuf (également interprété par Les Chats Sauvages) et La Dee Dah.

Les deux autres (et derniers) 45t qui sortent en juillet 1962 et en juillet 1963, sont purement instrumentaux et ne touchent guère le grand public.

Group native to the suburbs is from Paris, just as the Black Socks and the Vultures. Formé of Lou Vincent of his true name Louis Locatelli (singer), Christian Prunier (guitar), Alain Legrand (rhythmic guitar), Dominique Blanc-Francard says " Mino " (bass guitar) and GéRARD RUGE, later Michel Santangeli (battery). In début the training has the name of Hooligans and the group décide to change name to adopt that of Penguins. The group makes deuxième festival of the palace of Sports and a gala à the ABC with Wildcats. Quits Lou Vincent the Penguins to make its military service, then the group becomes an instrumental training. The group makes tournée with the circus Pinder and accompanies Danny boy. The Penguins take out 45 turns some other, then later the training dissolves. Every member continues one carrière in musical domain.

Trata-se de uma compilação com temas considerados raros de vários grupos rock do Peru e que actuaram/editaram entre 1964/74.

Outside of a handful of reissues from Inca rock outfits like We All Together, Traffic Sound, and Laghonia, the Peruvian music of the rock roll era has gone largely unrecognized and underappreciated in the English-speaking world. Back to Peru, a superbly eclectic and comprehensive overview of the scene during its 1964 to 1974 heyday, goes far in correcting the error, casting a net over the best hard rock, garage, soul, and unclassifiable weirdness the country has to offer. This stuff is rare even in its native land, going far beyond the few Peruvian artists who have earned international notice into uncharted territory -- the sheer scope of the material is impressive enough, but its consistently high quality really pushes the disc over the top. Highlights include Hot Butter Sound's "Pa Pa Pa," los Holys' "Holy's Psicodelicos," and Black Sugar's "Funky Man."

O EP que agora se apresenta é já considerado raro, pois trata-se de uma edição Sul Africana e que julgamos nunca ter sido paralelamente prensada em Portugal.

Aproveitamos para referir que também em 1966 foi editado o álbum/LP com o mesmo nome, "Conjunto Académico João Paulo no Teatro Monumental".

O disco incluía alguns temas já editados e englobou inéditos como "Stasera Pago Io", "La Nuit" e "Jezebel", num total de 12 faixas.
O grupo foi contratado pelo empresário Vasco Morgado para realizarem espectáculos no Teatro Monumental.
Este LP/álbum é também um documento raro e histórico. Gravado parcialmente ao vivo (alguns dos temas são originais de estúdio aos quais foram adicionadas posteriormente as palmas) no Teatro Monumental, em Lisboa, no ano de 1966, foi o primeiro LP português de música pop a ser editado em Portugal, numa época em que todas as gravações deste tipo de música eram divulgadas em formato reduzido de 45 rotações.
Este LP nunca foi editado em CD.
Sérgio Borges, Carlos Alberto, Ângelo Moura, José Gualberto, Rui Brasão e João Paulo, os seis membros da formação original, serviram de modelo à juventude daqueles anos de inocência, que se revia nas diversas versões das canções francesas, italianas e anglo-americanas então em voga.

A produção francesa da ópera rock "Hair", conta com a participação do músico português Sérgio Godinho, quando este residia em França, integrando o seu elenco e onde se mantém por dois anos.

Just about any version of the Hair score by Galt MacDermot sounds pretty darn great – but somehow, this French take from the late 60s really stands out! It might be the fact that the music – all freewheeling and groovy – fits perfectly with the best French pop modes of the late 60s – openly sensual, and with that inherent bounce that you usually find on Parisian grooves – making the music of MacDermot just ripe for a fresh French treatment! Vocals are pretty great, too – handled by Gloria Carter, Julien Cler, Bill Combs, and others – and titles include "Donna", "Haschich", "J'Suis Noir", "Oui J'Ai La Vie", "Air", "Hair", "Electric Blues", "Marchant Dans L'Espace", and "3500".

L'adaptation Française de Hair est reconnue comme la meilleure du monde devant l'originale ou la version Allemande;Grace en partie à Jacques Lanzmann,écrivain et parolier à cette époque,de Jacques Dutronc. Cette oeuvre n'a à mon avis,aucun intéret,si vous ne vous procurez pas les paroles des chansons ou le programme du spectacle pour (re)plonger dans le contexte.Cette comédie musicale culte contient plusieurs inédits de Julien Clerc aussi incontournables que "Laissons entrer le soleil"...La troupe du "Tribal" chante magnifiquement bien.

Bobby Fuller (22 de Outubro de 1942 - 18 de Julho de 1966) foi um cantor e guitarrista de rock dos Estados Unidos.
Líder do grupo The Bobby Fuller Four, que gravou "I Fought The Law" (1964), morreu em 1966 em Los Angeles/Califórnia por asfixia, ao aspirar vapores de gasolina. A polícia considerou a morte um aparente suicídio, embora muitos ainda acreditem que Bobby tenha sido assassinado. Ele foi encontrado dentro do seu carro, com vários ferimentos pelo corpo e coberto de gasolina, levantando a hipótese de que os prováveis autores do crime tiveram de fugir antes de poderem incendiar o veículo.

Este álbum foi editado por Reader’s Digest  Portugal (LP RDS9039 - 1976).

The Original London Cast LP of Hair was produced by Norrie Paramor under the musical direction of Derek Wadsworth. It's one of the most common Hair LPs out there and is distinctly average with few truly thrilling moments. The cast includes Marsha Hunt, Vince Edward, Paul Nicholas, Oliver Tobias, Michael Feast and Alex Harvey is on guitar.
The album emerged on Polydor during late 1968 and was also picked up by Reader's Digest and released in a 'lady afro' sleeve (1976).
